Ravens (single)

about

I wrote Ravens almost 20 years ago, while on a heartbreak tour in 2002, the year I left New Orleans.

Walking west alone along the south rim of the grand canyon with my mandolin, watching the acrobat birds, trying to pull some sense from a personal tragedy of my own making.

Ravens was destined for several albums, but never had blossomed in the studio. This ghostly autumn, I unearthed a long lost recording from New Years Eve, 2007, from Neti Vaan’s house in uptown New Orleans.

Ravens in dark and shining dress, a somber dirge tempo, driven by the stormy clarity of Helen Gillet’s cello to some mad lit place. I wanted you to hear it.

I made the animation to experiment, to interest myself. And you. To have a reason to release this dark little companionable bird into an anxious world.

lyrics

did you dine at your fathers table
drink his wine
think that you were able to decline
his bloody myths and fables
put your hand in mine

did you drink of the poisoned cup
do you think you have drunk enough
do you fall and fall
and fall in love

ravens run in threes
in and out the canyon
they duck and tease
lifted on the hands of the wind
they are pleased
calling out
calling out
put your hand in mine
put your hand in mine

did you eat the bitter bread
still believe what the old book says
when you feel its time to clear your head
put your hand in mine
put your hand in mine

power stole love’s gentleness
turned it all against us
we are jailed in this, caught
calling out
calling out
put your hand in mine
put your hand in mine

ravens run in threes
in and out the canyon
they duck and tease
lifted on the hands of the wind
they are pleased
calling out
calling out
put your hand in mine
put your hand in mine
put your hand in mine

Myshkin Warbler Astoria, Oregon

Myshkin and an ever-evolving crew of restless gamblers—string, horn, drum, key, and and wave players. Passions range from tango to electronica, folk-noir to gypsy-swing to modern classical to rocknroll. Literate & spooky. Myshkin mostly plays guitars. When warm, she sings like a shiver down your chakras. Like a heart breaking all wide open. Like one in utter control of uncontrollable things. ... more
